Visualizing Tests for Equality of Covariance Matrices

The main focus is on graphical methods that can be used to address the evaluation of this assumption. We introduce some extensions of data ellipsoids, hypothesis-error (HE) plots and canonical discriminant plots and demonstrate how they can be applied to the testing of equality of covariance matrices. Further, a simple plot of the components of Box's M test is proposed that shows _how_ groups differ in covariance and also suggests other visualizations and alternative test statistics. The Golden Age of Statistical Graphics

Abstract: Statistical graphics and data visualization have long histories, but their modern forms began only in the early 1800s. Between roughly 1850 and 1900 ($\pm10$), an explosive growth occurred in both the general use of graphic methods and the range of topics to which they were applied. Innovations were prodigious and some of the most exquisite graphics ever produced appeared, resulting in what may… ▽ More Statistical graphics and data visualization have long histories, but their modern forms began only in the early 1800s. Between roughly 1850 and 1900 ($\pm10$), an explosive growth occurred in both the general use of graphic methods and the range of topics to which they were applied. Innovations were prodigious and some of the most exquisite graphics ever produced appeared, resulting in what may be called the ``Golden Age of Statistical Graphics.'' In this article I trace the origins of this period in terms of the infrastructure required to produce this explosive growth: recognition of the importance of systematic data collection by the state; the rise of statistical theory and statistical thinking; enabling developments of technology; and inventions of novel methods to portray statistical data. To illustrate, I describe some specific contributions that give rise to the appellation ``Golden Age.'' △ Less

A.-M. Guerry's Moral Statistics of France: Challenges for Multivariable Spatial Analysis

Abstract: André-Michel Guerry's (1833) Essai sur la Statistique Morale de la France was one of the foundation studies of modern social science. Guerry assembled data on crimes, suicides, literacy and other ``moral statistics,'' and used tables and maps to analyze a variety of social issues in perhaps the first comprehensive study relating such variables. Indeed, the Essai may be considered the book that l… ▽ More André-Michel Guerry's (1833) Essai sur la Statistique Morale de la France was one of the foundation studies of modern social science. Guerry assembled data on crimes, suicides, literacy and other ``moral statistics,'' and used tables and maps to analyze a variety of social issues in perhaps the first comprehensive study relating such variables. Indeed, the Essai may be considered the book that launched modern empirical social science, for the questions raised and the methods Guerry developed to try to answer them. Guerry's data consist of a large number of variables recorded for each of the départments of France in the 1820--1830s and therefore involve both multivariate and geographical aspects. In addition to historical interest, these data provide the opportunity to ask how modern methods of statistics, graphics, thematic cartography and geovisualization can shed further light on the questions he raised. We present a variety of methods attempting to address Guerry's challenge for multivariate spatial statistics. △ Less
