Retrieving intracycle interference in angular-resolved laser-assisted photoemission from argon

Abstract: We report on a combined experimental and theoretical study of XUV ionization of atomic argon in the presence of a near-infrared laser field. The resulting energy- and angle- resolved photoemission spectra have been described in the literature as interferences among different photoionization trajectories. Electron trajectories stemming from different optical laser cycles give rise to \textit{intercycle} interference energy and result in new peaks known as sidebands. These sidebands are modulated by a coarse grained (gross) structure coming from the \textit{intracycle} interference of the electron trajectories born during the same optical cycle. We calculate the photoelectron emission by solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation \textit{ab initio} and within the continuum-distorted wave strong field approximation. In order to compare with the experimental data we average the calculated energy-angle probability distributions over the experimental focal volume. This averaging procedure washes out the intracycle interference pattern, which we experimentally and theoretically (numerically) recover by subtracting two averaged distributions for slightly different near-infrared laser field intensities. △ Less

Alignment and characterization of the two-stage time delay compensating XUV monochromator

Abstract: We present the design, implementation and alignment procedure for a two-stage time delay compensating monochromator. The setup spectrally filters the radiation of a high-order harmonic generation source providing wavelength-selected XUV pulses with a bandwidth of 300 to 600~meV in the photon energy range of 3 to 50~eV. XUV pulses as short as $12\pm3$~fs are demonstrated. Transmission of the 400~nm… ▽ More We present the design, implementation and alignment procedure for a two-stage time delay compensating monochromator. The setup spectrally filters the radiation of a high-order harmonic generation source providing wavelength-selected XUV pulses with a bandwidth of 300 to 600~meV in the photon energy range of 3 to 50~eV. XUV pulses as short as $12\pm3$~fs are demonstrated. Transmission of the 400~nm (3.1~eV) light facilitates precise alignment of the monochromator. This alignment strategy together with the stable mechanical design of the motorized beamline components enables us to automatically scan the XUV photon energ in pump-probe experiments that require XUV beam pointing stability. The performance of the beamline is demonstrated by the generation of IR-assisted sidebands in XUV photoionization of argon atoms. △ Less
