Determination of the CKM angle gamma and |V_{ub}/V_{cb}| from inclusive direct CP asymmetries and branching ratios in charmless B decays

Abstract: We have calculated inclusive direct CP-asymmetries for charmless B^{+/-} -decays. After summing large logarithms to all orders the CP-asymmetries in Delta S=0 and Delta S=1 decays are found as a_{CP} (Delta S=0) = (2.0 +1.2/-1.0)% and a_{CP} (Delta S=1) = ( -1.0 +/- 0.5)%. These results are much larger than previous estimates based on a work without summation of large logarithms. After summing large logarithms to all orders the CP-asymmetries in Delta S=0 and Delta S=1 decays are found as a_{CP} (Delta S=0) = (2.0 +1.2/-1.0)% and a_{CP} (Delta S=1) = ( -1.0 +/- 0.5)%. These results are much larger than previous estimates based on a work without summation of large logarithms. We further show that the dominant contribution to a_{CP} (ΔS=0 ) is proportional to (sin gamma) times |V_{cb}/V_{ub}|. The constraints on the apex (rho-bar,eta-bar) of the unitarity triangle obtained from these two CP-asymmetries define circles in the (rho-bar,eta-bar)-plane. We have likewise analyzed the information on the unitarity triangle obtainable from a measurement of the average non-leptonic branching ratios Br(Delta S=0), Br(Delta S=1) and their sum Br_{NL} (B --> no charm). These CP-conserving quantities define circles centered on the rho-bar--axis of the (rho-bar,eta-bar)-plane. We expect a determination of |V_{ub}/V_{cb}| from Br_{NL} (B --> no charm) to be promising. Our results contain some new QCD corrections enhancing Br(Delta S=1), which now exceeds Br(Delta S=0) by roughly a factor of two. △ Less

Penguin Diagrams, Charmless B-Decays and the ``Missing Charm Puzzle''

Abstract: We calculate the contributions of penguin diagrams with internal u or c quarks to various inclusive charmless B-decay rates. Further we analyze the influence of the chromomagnetic dipole operator Q_8 on these rates. We find that the rates corresponding to B-bar --> X_{u u-bar s}, B-bar --> X_{d d-bar s}, B-bar --> X_{s s-bar s}, B-bar --> X_{s s-bar d} and B --> X_{d d-bar d} are dominated by th… ▽ More We calculate the contributions of penguin diagrams with internal u or c quarks to various inclusive charmless B-decay rates. Further we analyze the influence of the chromomagnetic dipole operator Q_8 on these rates. We find that the rates corresponding to B-bar --> X_{u u-bar s}, B-bar --> X_{d d-bar s}, B-bar --> X_{s s-bar s}, B-bar --> X_{s s-bar d} and B --> X_{d d-bar d} are dominated by the new penguin contributions. The contributions of Q_8 sizably diminish these rates. Despite of an increase of the total charmless decay rate by 36 % the new contributions are not large enough to explain the charm deficit observed by ARGUS and CLEO. We predict n_c=1.33 +/- 0.06 for the average number of charmed particles per B-decay in the Standard Model. Then the hypothesis of an enhancement of the chromomagnetic dipole coefficient C_8 by new physics contributions is analyzed. We perform a model independent fit of C_8 to the experimental data. If the CKM structure of the new physics contribution is the same as in the Standard Model, |C_8(M_W)| must be enhanced by a factor of 9 to 16 in order to explain the observed charm deficit. △ Less

Waiting for the Top Quark Mass, K^+ --> π^+ ν\barν, B_s^0-\bar{B}_s^0 Mixing and CP Asymmetries in B-Decays

Abstract: Anticipating improved determinations of m_t, |V_ub/V_cb|, B_K and F_B \sqrt{B_B} in the next five years we make an excursion in the future in order to find a possible picture of the unitarity triangle, of quark mixing and of CP-violation around the year 2000. We then analyse what impact on this picture will have the measurements of four possibly cleanest quantities: BR(K^+ --> π^+ ν\barν), x_d/x… ▽ More Anticipating improved determinations of m_t, |V_ub/V_cb|, B_K and F_B \sqrt{B_B} in the next five years we make an excursion in the future in order to find a possible picture of the unitarity triangle, of quark mixing and of CP-violation around the year 2000.
