Production of t anti-t b anti-b at the LHC at NLO QCD

We find that the scale choice adopted in ATLAS simulations underestimates the tTbB background by a factor two and introduce a new dynamical scale that stabilises the perturbative predictions. In the regime of highly boosted Higgs bosons, which offers better perspectives to observe the tTH(H-> bB) signal, the corrections induce significant distortions in the kinematic distributions. △ Less

The leading-order cross section is extremely sensitive to scale variations. We observe that the traditional scale choice adopted in ATLAS simulations underestimates the top anti-top bottom anti-bottom background by a factor two and introduce a new dynamical scale that stabilizes the perturbative predictions. We study various kinematic distributions and observe that the corrections have little impact on their shapes if standard cuts are applied. In the regime of highly boosted Higgs bosons, which offers better perspectives to observe the top anti-top Higgs signal, we find significant distortions of the kinematic distributions. The one-loop amplitudes are computed using process-independent algebraic manipulations of Feynman diagrams and numerical tensor reduction. We find that this approach provides very high numerical stability and CPU efficiency. △ Less

Mixed QCD-electroweak contributions to Higgs-plus-dijet production at the LHC

We reproduce results recently discussed in the literature, but go beyond this calculation by including a class of diagrams not considered previously. Loop-induced interference contributions are found to exhibit kinematical distributions different in shape from vector boson fusion. This calculation is improved by higher-order corrections originating from heavy-Higgs-boson effects and photonic final-state radiation off charged leptons. The W- and Z-boson resonances ar… ▽ More The radiative corrections of the strong and electroweak interactions are calculated for the Higgs-boson decays H -> WW/ZZ -> 4f with semileptonic or hadronic four-fermion final states in next-to-leading order. This calculation is improved by higher-order corrections originating from heavy-Higgs-boson effects and photonic final-state radiation off charged leptons. The W- and Z-boson resonances are treated within the complex-mass scheme, i.e. without any resonance expansion or on-shell approximation. The calculation essentially follows our previous study of purely leptonic final states. The electroweak corrections are similar for all four-fermion final states; for integrated quantities they amount to some per cent and increase with growing Higgs-boson mass M_H, reaching 7-8% at M_H \sim 500 GeV. For distributions, the corrections are somewhat larger and, in general, distort the shapes. Among the QCD corrections, which include corrections to interference contributions of the Born diagrams, only the corrections to the squared Born diagrams turn out to be relevant. These contributions can be attributed to the gauge-boson decays, i.e. they approximately amount to α_s/πfor semileptonic final states and 2α_s/πfor hadronic final states. The discussed corrections have been implemented in the Monte Carlo event generator PROPHECY4F. △ Less

On the one hand, we performed a variety of experimental and theoretical studies on standard candles (such as W, Z, and ttbar production), treating them either as proper signals of known physics, or as backgrounds to unknown physics; we also addressed issues relevant to those non-perturbative or semi-perturbative ingredients, such as Parton Density Functions and Underlying Events, whose understanding will be crucial for a proper simulation of the actual events taking place in the detectors. On the other hand, several channels for the production of the Higgs, or involving the Higgs, have been considered in some detail. The report is structured into four main parts. The first one deals with Standard Model physics, except the Higgs. A variety of arguments are treated here, from full simulation of processes constituting a background to Higgs production, to studies of uncertainties due to PDFs and to extrapolations of models for underlying events, from small-$x$ issues to electroweak corrections which may play a role in vector boson physics. The second part of the report treats Higgs physics from the point of view of the signal. In the third part, reviews are presented on the current status of multi-leg, next-to-leading order and of next-to-next-to-leading order QCD computations. We present the complete electroweak radiative corrections of O(α) to these processes, including improvements beyond O(α) originating from heavy-Higgs effects and final-state radiation. The intermediate W- and Z-boson re… ▽ More The decay of the Standard Model Higgs boson into four leptons via a virtual W-boson or Z-boson pair is one of the most important decay modes in the Higgs-boson search at the LHC. We present the complete electroweak radiative corrections of O(α) to these processes, including improvements beyond O(α) originating from heavy-Higgs effects and final-state radiation. The intermediate W- and Z-boson resonances are described (without any expansion or on-shell approximation) by consistently employing complex mass parameters for the gauge bosons (complex-mass scheme). The corrections to partial decay widths typically amount to some per cent and increase with growing Higgs mass M_H, reaching about 8% at M_H \sim 500 GeV. For not too large Higgs masses (M_H <\sim 400 GeV) the corrections to the partial decay widths can be reproduced within <\sim 2% by simple approximations. For angular distributions the corrections are somewhat larger and distort the shapes. For invariant-mass distributions of fermion pairs they can reach several tens of per cent depending on the treatment of photon radiation. For the proce… ▽ More We have constructed a Monte Carlo generator for lowest-order predictions for the processes gamma gamma -> 4f and gamma gamma -> 4f+gamma in the Standard Model and extensions thereof by an effective gamma gamma Higgs coupling as well as anomalous triple and quartic gauge-boson couplings. Polarization is fully supported, and a realistic photon beam spectrum can be taken into account. For the processes gamma gamma -> 4f all helicity amplitudes are explicitly given in a compact form. The presented numerical results contain, in particular, a survey of cross sections for representative final states and their comparison to results obtained with the program package Whizard/Madgraph. The impact of a realistic beam spectrum on cross sections and distributions is illustrated. Moreover, the size of various contributions to cross sections, such as from weak charged- or neutral-current, or from strong interactions, is analyzed. Particular attention is paid to W-pair production channels gamma gamma -> W W -> 4f(+gamma) where we investigate the impact of background diagrams, possible definitions of the W-pair signal, and the issue of gauge-invariance violation caused by finite gauge-boson widths. Finally, the effects of triple and quartic anomalous gauge-boson couplings on cross sections as well as the possibility to constrain these anomalous couplings at future gamma gamma colliders are discussed. △ Less
