Many studies have been conducted on Series Elastic Actuators (SEA) for robot joints because they are effective in terms of flexibility, safety, and energy efficiency. The ability of SEA to robustly handle unexpected disturbances has raised expectations for practical applications in environments where robots interact with humans. On the other hand, the development and commercialization of small robots for indoor entertainment applications is also actively underway, and it is thought that by using SEA in these robots, dynamic movements such as jumping and running can be realized. In this work, we developed a small and lightweight SEA using coil springs as elastic elements. By devising a method for fixing the coil spring, it is possible to absorb shock and perform highly accurate force measurement in both rotational directions with a simple structure. In addition, to verify the effectiveness of the developed SEA, we created a small single-legged robot with SEA implemented in the three joints of the hip, knee, and ankle, and we conducted a drop test. By adjusting the initial posture and control gain of each joint, we confirmed that flexible landing and continuous hopping are possible with simple PD position control. The measurement results showed that SEA is effective in terms of shock absorption and energy reuse. This work was performed for research purposes only.

Currently, the development of the metaverse lies in the hands of industry. Citizens have little influence on this process. Instead, to do justice to the pluralism of (digital) societies, we should strive for an open discourse including many different perspectives on the metaverse and its core technologies such as AI. We utilize a participatory speculative design (PSD) approach to explore Japanese citizens' perspectives on future metaverse societies, as well as social and ethical implications. Our contributions are twofold. Firstly, we demonstrate the effectiveness of PSD in engaging citizens in critical discourse on emerging technologies like the metaverse, offering our workshop framework as a methodological contribution. Secondly, we identify key themes from participants' perspectives, providing insights for culturally sensitive design and development of virtual environments. Our analysis shows that participants imagine the metaverse to have the potential to solve a variety of societal issues; for example, breaking down barriers of physical environments for communication, social interaction, crisis preparation, and political participation, or tackling identity-related issues. Regarding future metaverse societies, participants' imaginations raise critical questions about human-AI relations, technical solutionism, politics and technology, globalization and local cultures, and immersive technologies. We discuss implications and contribute to expanding conversations on metaverse developments.

Let $G$ be a graph such that each edge has its list of available colors, and assume that each list is a subset of the common set consisting of $k$ colors. Suppose that we are given two list edge-colorings $f_0$ and $f_r$ of $G$, and asked whether there exists a sequence of list edge-colorings of $G$ between $f_0$ and $f_r$ such that each list edge-coloring can be obtained from the previous one by changing a color assignment of exactly one edge. This problem is known to be PSPACE-complete for every integer $k \ge 6$ and planar graphs of maximum degree three, but any complexity hardness was unknown for the non-list variant. In this paper, we first improve the known result by proving that, for every integer $k \ge 4$, the problem remains PSPACE-complete even if an input graph is planar, bounded bandwidth, and of maximum degree three. We then give the first complexity hardness result for the non-list variant: for every integer $k \ge 5$, we prove that the non-list variant is PSPACE-complete even if an input graph is planar, of bandwidth linear in $k$, and of maximum degree $k$.
