HD 144812: A transition-phase massive star in a binary system

Authors: Michalis Kourniotis, Michaela Kraus, Maria Laura Arias, Lydia S. Cidale

Abstract: In this Letter, we shed light on the evolutionary phase of HD 144812, a Galactic yellow supergiant showing infrared excess that is typically expected for evolved stars undergoing enhanced mass-loss activity. We present high-resolution spectroscopy of the star in the $H-$ and $K-$band acquired with the GRating INfrared Spectrometer (IGRINS) and further explore multi-band imaging of the wider field… ▽ More

    Authors: Y. J. Aidelman, M. Borges Fernandes, L. S. Cidale, A. Smith Castelli, M. L. Arias, J. Zorec, M. Kraus, A. Torres, T. B. Souza, Y. R. Cochetti

Abstract: Context. Stars in transition phases, like those showing the B[e] phenomenon and luminous blue variables (LBVs), undergo strong, often irregular mass ejection events. The prediction of these phases in stellar evolution models is therefore extremely difficult if not impossible. As a result, their effective temperatures, their luminosities and even their true nature are not fully known. Aims. A sui… ▽ More

Authors: Andrea F. Torres, María L. Arias, Michaela Kraus, Lorena V. Mercanti, Tõnis Eenmäe

Abstract: The B[e] phenomenon is manifested by a heterogeneous group of stars surrounded by gaseous and dusty circumstellar envelopes with similar physical conditions. Among these stars, the FS CMa-type objects are suspected to be binary systems, which could be experiencing or have undergone a mass-transfer process that could explain the large amount of material surrounding them. Dense Molecular Environments of B[e] Supergiants and Yellow Hypergiants

Authors: Michaela Kraus, Michalis Kourniotis, Maria Laura Arias, Andrea F. Torres, Dieter H. Nickeler

Abstract: Massive stars expel large amounts of mass during their late evolutionary phases. We aim to unveil the physical conditions within the warm molecular environments of B[e] supergiants (B[e]SGs) and yellow hypergiants (YHGs), which are known to be embedded in circumstellar shells and disks. We present K-band spectra of two B[e]SGs from the Large Magellanic Cloud and four Galactic YHGs. The CO band emi… ▽ More

  5. NGC 6153: Reality is complicated

Authors: Michael G. Richer, Anabel Arrieta, Lorena Arias, Lesly Castañeda Carlos, Silvia Torres-Peimbert, José Alberto López, Adolfo Galindo

Abstract: We study the kinematics of emission lines that arise from many physical processes in NGC 6153 based upon deep, spatially-resolved, high resolution spectra acquired with the UVES spectrograph at the ESO VLT. Our most basic finding is that the plasma in NGC 6153 is complex, especially its temperature structure. The kinematics of most emission lines defines a classic expansion law, with the outer par… ▽ More

Simultaneous J-, H-, K- and L-band spectroscopic observations of galactic Be stars. I. IR atlas

    Authors: Y. R. Cochetti, M. L. Arias, L. S. Cidale, A. Granada, A. F. Torres

Abstract: It is already accepted that Be stars are surrounded by circumstellar envelopes, which are mostly compatible with a disc geometry in Keplerian rotation. We aim to obtain a more complete characterisation of the properties of the circumstellar environment of Be stars that helps to constrain the theoretical models of the Be phenomenon. Authors: Yanina R. Cochetti, Michaela Kraus, María L. Arias, Lydia S. Cidale, Tõnis Eenmäe, Tiina Liimets, Andrea F. Torres, Anlaug A. Djupvik

Abstract: Massive stars typically undergo short-lived post-main sequence evolutionary phases with strong mass loss and occasional mass eruptions. Many of such massive stars in transition phases have been identified based on their dusty envelopes. Authors: Y. R. Cochetti, J. Zorec, L. S. Cidale, M. L. Arias, Y. Aidelman, A. F. Torres, Y. Frémat, A. Granada

Abstract: A significant number of Be stars show a second Balmer discontinuity (sBD) attributed to an extended circumstellar envelope (CE). The fast rotational velocity of Be stars undoubtedly plays a significant role in the formation of the CE. The mass-loss during this phase creates a complex circumstellar environment with atomic, molecular, and dusty regions usually found in rings or disk-like structures. Abstract: We have surveyed the inner 5' of the Orion Nebula by means of Halpha and [NII] Fabry-Perot imaging spectroscopy to present a kinematical study of the Herbig-Haro objects in the nebula. The objects studied in this work are HH 202, 203, 204, 529, 269 and other associated features. For HH 202 we find new features that, because of their high velocities (up to 100 km/seg) indicate the presence of an… ▽ More

  35. The influence of massive stars in the interstellar medium of IC 1613: the supernova remnant S8 and the nebula S3 associated with a WO star

Abstract: We present a detailed kinematical analysis of two selected nebulae in the Local Group irregular galaxy IC 1613. The nebulae are: S8, the only known supernova remnant in this galaxy, and S3, a Wolf-Rayet nebula associated with the only WO star in this galaxy. For S8, we have obtained and analyzed its radial velocity field, where we found complex profiles which can be fitted by several velocity co… ▽ More
