Gluon Radiation in $t\bar t$ Production and Decay at the LHC

Abstract: Understanding the pattern of gluon radiation in $t \bar t$ production and decay processes is important for making an accurate determination of the top mass from the momenta of its decay products. The larger energy of the LHC $pp$ collider boosts the top cross section by a factor of 100 compared to that at the Tevatron, but it also increases the amount of additional gluon radiation. Hard diffractive scattering: partons and QCD

Constraining a CP-violating WWV coupling from the W^+W^- threshold cross section at LEP2

We show that such configurations can also be generated by conventional background $e^+e^-\ar 4$~parton processes, in particular QCD $q \bar q g g$ and $q \bar q Q \bar Q$ and non--resonant electroweak $q \bar q Q \bar Q$ production. We study the colour and kinematic structure of these background contributions, and estimate the event rate to be expected at LEP2. We find that the QCD processes are heavily suppressed, but that non--resonant $q \bar q Q \bar Q$ production may be comparable in rate to the expected `short string' signal from $W^+W^-$ production. △ Less

Can partons describe the CDF jet data?

Abstract: In Ref.~\cite{paper} we calculated all the experimentally relevant branching ratios of the Higgs bosons of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, paying particular attention to the contributions from below--threshold decays. Unfortunately, an error in one of the subroutines of the {\tt FORTRAN} code we used was affecting the computation of the off--shell partial widths of the decays… ▽ More In Ref.~\cite{paper} we calculated all the experimentally relevant branching ratios of the Higgs bosons of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, paying particular attention to the contributions from below--threshold decays. Deep Inelastic Electron-Pomeron Scattering at HERA

Ambiguities in the normalization of the pomeron flux and the possiblity of a direct coupling of the pomeron to single quarks are discussed, yielding two equally possible scenarios for the parton distributions in the pomeron. The Measurement of M(W) from the W+W- Threshold Cross Section at LEP2

Pinning down the Glue in the Proton

These extra jets can cause complications when attempting to reconstruct $m_t$ from the invariant mass of combinations of final-state quarks and leptons. The data are then consistent with a modest amount of the proton's spin carried by the gluon, although the shape of the gluon distribution is not well constrained, and several qualitatively different shapes are suggested. Three-jet final states and measuring the $γγ$ width of the Higgs at a photon linear collider

Potentially important backgrounds from the continuum $γγ\to c \bar c, b \bar b$ leading-order processes can be suppressed by a factor $m_q^2/s$ by using polarized photon beams in the $J_z=0$ initial-state configuration. We show that the same $m_q^2/s$ suppressions do not necessarily apply to the radiative processes $γγ\to c \bar c g, b \bar b g$. These processes can mimic the two-jet topology of the Higgs signal when two of the three partons are collinear, or when one of the partons is soft or directed down the beam pipe. We calculate the contribution of these processes to the two-jet background in the $J_z=0$ channel. We investigate the effect of imposing additional event shape, jet width and secondary vertex cuts on both signal and background, and show that with reasonable detector capabilities it should be possible to reduce the background to a manageable level. △ Less

We show that in the backward rapidity region the cross section is strongly sensitive to the small-$x$ behaviour of the quark distributions in the proton, and that with sufficient luminosity it should be possible to distinguish singular $xq \sim x^{-1/2}$ behaviour from standard Regge $xq \sim x^0$ behaviour. The effect on the event rate of experimental acceptance cuts is studied with the help of a Monte Carlo event generator. △ Less
